Enter the Steve Lacy universe

Remixing worlds to create a universe of new

When it comes to chart-topping music, only a select few succeed in crafting a unique outlook and voice all on their own. But when it comes to Steve Lacy, it’s clear what his vision of the world is. And we’re all just grateful to be living in it. As we talk to the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist about his creative process, it becomes clear that Lacy’s approach is one of combining different realms of inspiration to create new, innovative worlds of his own. And his revamped retro spin on Bose x Steve Lacy Ultra Open Earbuds and QuietComfort Headphones, proves his innovation goes farther than the music. With Lacy, it’s all about evolution — and how to fashion something new out of an array of existing perspectives.

“I love applying the old approach to newer things.”

What was your creative process and inspiration for the collab?

“I was working on some music in some cool studio that I adore, and my friend Aus and I were trying to come up with all these different ideas and color ways. I looked down at this board and I said, whoa, these colors are kind of perfect. And I love applying the old approach to newer things. And I think we created something that felt like vintage and modern, which is always something that feels good for everyone, I think, and classic. So I'm really happy with how it came out, and I like how it goes with my outfits.”

What inspires you the most when making music?

“Kind of just playing with a bunch of different textures and things. I listen to a lot of music, and every week I listen to what comes out as well. And I think there are so many opportunities to play with so many of these different textures and approaches ... So I think that’s what inspires me, and that’s what keeps me excited to keep creating things, like mixing elements from things that I love.”

How would you say your creative process evolved over the years?

“I think my process has evolved in a way that is a little more thoughtful and a little more intentional. Like, I’m thinking about how to get the thought or the idea to be the most precise. Like, I know how I’m feeling, and I want you to feel that as much as I can possibly translate that to you. So, I think I’ve become very focused on translating my feelings clearly, and that wasn’t always my intention.”

How do you feel about collaboration?

“With collaboration comes more choices, more freedom.”

What I love about collaboration is all the different perspectives ... the options to choose. I think sometimes when you’re working alone maybe there’s limited options. So, I think with collaboration comes more choices, more freedom, or at least more knowledge to know exactly what you want.
